Hello guys.
This is something I hold dear to my heart. I'm sure BrunoMassino will be able to vouch for me. I am proud of these guys and although the unit was disbanded a few years ago. There are some nice little snippets of action and urban breaching you guys could take a look at. I feel sorry for these guys and it hurts me to know that this unit no longer exists. Respect to them. I've got this on my hard drive so I can upload it onto our mediafire account but it may take many days, so best to just watch it here.
Please feel free to watch this documentary. I have just had a lovely conversation with Drak concerning policing and I feel this is a fitting tribute to any law enforcement, be it military or secular.
Also feel free to add any clips/documentaries or movies you wish to share. BOPE is a good example of a movie based on true life strategy.
Regards. BN
PART 1 (Be patient, the action only starts a little later on in the vid)

Watched already 2 of the 3 videos... One simple word describes it best: RESPECT! Those guys have balls...not the rambo-style-balls, but the one of skilled, tactical and very hard trained daily work. The recruitment must be horrible with 200km of walk, 4 days without food and rest (and that is just the start of the recruitment month). I really like the "car stop scene" in the 2nd video ...just *lol*...Very effective and no one killed. But you said they are not existing any more, but concerning wiki and other I-Net sources they are still up...so what's the truth!? The German equivalent would be the SEK/MEK (state-organized unit (Landespolizei) task are hostage rescue, pursuits and stuff) and the GSG9 (part of the federal police (Bundespolizei) task is in general fight against terrorism and hostage situations in out-of-border cases)

Ah! I'm glad you are enjoying it. Are you talking about the airport gang? Yes, it's great. It's called "Vasbyt", a term used by lots of people when you're going through a very tough time you just have to bite down and carry on. The SADF used it in training too and those railroad linkages are extremely painful and heavy (over time) to carry.
Well, in my opinion they aren't the same today and I do not think they're as "special". Although they do have a so called special task force, i now believe that's it's part of the usual SAPD, from what I know a lot of these guys seen in the video have moved on to better jobs. Many to EO (which is also non existant) and to other PMC's, alot operating in Afghanistan at the moment. I am about 70% sure that Morris now works as a bodyguard and chauffeur for big CEO's.
This is difficult to explain to you without sounding bitter or resentful but I will try my best to stay as neutral on the subject as possible. I'm not claiming to know it all but this is the best way to put it in a realistic manner. The media will also vouch on certain matters below.
The whole problem is that they were really good at their job, so good that they would often uncover a lot of corruption (not only them but another force called the scorpions who have also been conveniently done away with.)This uncovering of corruption within our government often caused a media circus and so many of these forces were shut down or conveniently "renamed". I am confident in saying that their protocol changed to such an extent that they were either dismissed or demoted to a position as a force that had no power to effectively fight crime. The other problem with many of these units was because they were predominantly white and due to South Africa's current situation many a times it is deemed mandatory to allow people of colour into any unit/company/organisation, it is a law in our "new South Africa", since 1994 the Government is still fucking their people over and still blaming the whites. - regardless of skill.
Because of their high standards (the above unit) and the inability for certain people not being able to get in due to skill/fitness/perseverance regardless of colour, units like these are often deemed as racial divides and once again, they get pushed back. Statistics on arrests based on colour also make this divide greater but demographically speaking, white is a minority race in this country and it is only realistic to believe then that most arrests would be of colour. So I blame(actually, it is impossible for them to be racist according to the ruling party), racism towards white people (These are usually ex military individuals with more experience than the average joe...They have often been refused promotion due to the colour of their skin and there have been two cases that made it to the media.) and ofcourse, mismanagement found in the higher government.
A good example of this would be our current, everyday police force. We can't always rely on the police. Personally, my brother and I have been robbed, broken into, experienced gunfire, and occasional street violence and most times the police take approximately four hours to arrive. Sometimes they respond by saying that none of their vehicles are currently operating but you can pick them up at the station if it's that necessary. I also believe some of the public have lost faith in their protectors as I have a friend who has been raped by two uniformed officers, additionally, I know many stories of life lost due to their negligence. Still, there are some good, honest hard working policemen out there and I do not wish to slander them. Furthermore most people rely on private security companies as their response times are better and they also seem to be trained better. Having said that, there are many policeman that give the force a bad name and I am grateful for about the 30% that actually do their job properly. So we had the STF as an insurance and now basically we're fucked if we need any form of government law enforcement. Many of their (STF, Scorps) arrests included corrupt government members and they were quick to put an end to fine policing in order to continue running our country, so now we are stuck with stressed, overworked and underpaid officers who regularly off themselves along with their wife and children. You read about it once every month depending where you live.
It doesn't end there... My father's cousin is a train driver. They often use mob violence in the community but beat the guy up so he can't move and leave him on the train tracks, that way they are not responsible. So my dad's cousin runs this guy over (not on purpose) but he can't stop a 100ton train in a matter of seconds. He ends up in court and the Judge asks him "why did you not swerve out?" A frikkin judge!? It's this kind of incompetence you find higher up. If you hit a drunk guy who jumps in front of your car, you go to jail, get raped and come home with aids if you aren't killed in jail anyways. Everything regarding the law in our country is turning to shit. That's my personal opinion- perhaps i'm negative, perhaps i'm speaking for people i know and experiences.
So there you have a basic idea of how things get done around here. Still, the country hasn't turned to total shit yet and we learn to live with it. It's everyday life. It's even worse for many of the black population who are still getting screwed regardless of ruling party. It's sad you know... because if I can't feed my family, what do I do? Ofcourse I will turn to stealing if I can't get a job and i'm on the street. But then you get a lot of these fuckers who will kill you for a cellphone, rape your friend's pregnant mother and then make off with your ATM cards. Some people don't have a conscious. It's these fuckers that the SASTF were stopping yet these days you never hear of them. They're part of history.
Sorry for the essay, but that's my 2 cents and it gives you a better picture. Also watch the 3rd episode and hear what happens to those criminals that they spent all that time getting to. You will throw something at the wall, it's like that all the time if you know the right people.
Regards and thanks for taking an interest.
P.S. Please tell me more about the GSG 9? They operate outside Germany too? I looked up to those guys ever since I played CS1.3 lol.

Okay, I guess I got what you mean with they are not like they were before. In the both videos the narrator and the interviewed guys said, that the payment is shit and I read that most of them actually moved to PMC and worked in Iraq - so that fits to what you said (isn't so far just your experience and opinion). And when corruption takes the lead, if there is no one you can trust in to 100% - beside your family -, it's the sad but also understandable reality, that ppl take on the justice and organize their own safety. And about the problem concerning the race (even in the units it was no matter of what religion, race or whatever you are - just the skills count) as far as I know from documentaries and this stuff, it's turned to 180°... Now the whites are the former blacks and the other way around. But also - as you said - those who where poor, are still poor and can't get on a better life (talking about the blacks), so for them nothing had changed beside the colour of those who represent the government. ...but should stop getting into politic (forum rules), nevertheless I assume, it's just a short description of the status and not about discussing South Africa politic itself. About the GSG9: It was founded 1972 due to they recognized, that the normal police has not the strength to stop terrorists and hard hostage situations, because of wrong/missing training and the wrong equipment. Because of the terrorist attack on the summer Olympic games 1972, they decided to found this team. It is/was a paramilitary unit, being part of the "Bundesgrenzschutz" (the former Bundespolizei/Federal Police...Federal Border Guard Service). GSG9 stands for Grenzschutzgruppe 9...even the Bundesgrenzschutz has now another name, they still have this name, because it's something like a "sign for quality". Most popular operation was the "Operation Fire Magic" with the hostage rescue at the "Landshut" in Somalia. Those guys wear in general black/dark blue uniform, so they are easy to distinguished from SEK/MEK, due to they were in general civilian clothes or more light blue tactical stuff... Beside the landshut operation, there are just few operations which are known in the public, due to they are in most cases in undercover operations...you just hear, that there was again an operation lead or done by this unit. They are not that held in public. What I know is, that they were prepared and ready to rescue the crew of the ship "Hansa Stavanger", supported by the "USS Boxer" and German Warships/Fregatten but before they were released, the operation was stopped because US and German politics feared it could turn into a bloodbath... That is what I can tell you for now...I just know some documentaries in German language, but I'll check youtube later, if there is any good one in English around
