Some new information all should know. Radio types: Long range: PRC-148, backpack radios Short range: PRC-343 Communication happens inside these types, for example one can contact with backpack radio someone who has PRC-148 if they are in same channel. And because I'm lazy: olutta.org/forum/index.php?topic=2657.0

VHF and UHF differences: Military radio frequencies for Western forces fall in the VHF (Very High Frequency) and UHF (Ultra High Frequency) bands. For the purposes of ACRE this is from 30Mhz to 512Mhz.
VHF antennas tend to be longer, since the wavelength of these frequencies is larger than those of UHF antennas. UHF antennas can be much shorter. This means that the VHF version of the AN/PRC-148 will get better reception in the lower frequency bands (30Mhz-120Mhz) than the UHF version will.
So if you're operating on lower freqs use the VHF version, if on higher freqs (120Mhz+) its better to be using the UHF version.

Vehicle racks:
Air vehicles have built-in PRC-117F radios (Max power is 20000). Also HMMWVs and some other ground vehicles have slot for PRC-148 radios (UHV, VHF) which allows longer range for the radio, vehicle racks.
Access these with: shift+alt+Q.
