One of the most fundamental combat survival skills is situational awareness. This means that you are alerted to your surrounding environment and can leverage your knowledge of the battlefield's state to make tactical decisions and judgment calls.
Maintaining good situational awareness to prevent friendly casualties. Proper situational awareness will allow you to spot the enemy before they find you, detect an ambush before it's executed, and notice unusual characteristics of the environment that may give away the presence of mines, booby traps, enemy vehicles...
BASIC SITUATIONAL AWARENESS
* Whether you're moving or halted, you should always be scanning for the enemy.
* Cover whatever areas you have been assigned to cover, don't let your guard down.
* When you're not moving, find cover if possible, and continue to scan.
* Be aware of fixing your visual to one specific target/object. ('tunnel vision')
* Check the map frequently to maintain awareness of friendly positions and suspected enemy locations.
One good skill that come in your favor is the skill of cover & concealment, look for anything that might be cover for the enemy (stone walls, buildings, tree lines...), ambush positions (effective MG fire, mines...), look for signs of movement how ever small. Try to think like enemy how and where would he take cover/conceal himself.
