Battleground Europe www.battlegroundeurope.net/homeFairly old game with old graphics. It simulates realistic bullet drop, fatigue, health, vehicle handling, weapons ect... All players play with hundreds of others in one server, on one giant map, playing a battle on an epic scale. There's no AI, all encounters are people. Its pay to win, but the free stuff is ok. So massive free OFP is already here
I guess in a couple of years we will see massive free Arma 1
I'll give it a try
great idea - play free and if you want to use mg and Tiger tank - you pay 5 bucks

Played couple of missions there today
Not that much to my liking.
minuses:
Small inf targets just like in Arma 3
Engagements split to brigades which is actually like small servers - you can get from one battle to another by land but why spend time on it if you can choose another brigade. The brigade battles are not larger then Arma servers and some are like 7 vs 7 ppl
Chaotic firefights, like counter-strike with addition of tanks/air. Its because logistics aspect is poor.
Graphics quite crappy. I am sure client-downloaded game could afford better one
Crappy controls for stance - F and V - just shit
No leaning Q E. You just go around the corner and shoot
pluses:
some animations are pretty well done and killing/falling down are better than Arma 1 (which was to my mind the best Arma animation edition)
rifle shooting is fun, ballistics fine - you even have adjustable iron sights by default
Many features are just like hardcore Arma ACE - nearby explosion concussion etc. Many things with vehicles are just way better than Arma and Arma ACE - tank interiors and battle damage in fight and many other.
Maybe i would go and play some more missions but it will not become my game i think
I am now starting to think i need ideal milsim which would be:
Arma 1 (for best animations and best balance between graphics, controls and gameplay) + OFP approach to making storyline to campaign and missions + Arma 2 mods and maps + Arma 3 ballistic penetration

Why not wait for Squad to come out. If you ask me that would be one of the best alternatives.

I hate Squad with a passion.
Not because its bad, but because it looks like it can kill Arma in terms of realism.
Also, Squad is not free.

Squad's map is like some labirinth, its made for CS not Arma
So I guess Squad would be capture the flag game, it wont kill Arma
Arma is immense and will be killed only by Steam
